Triacetin

Triacetin is used as a food additive for its humectant property under the number E15187.
Like propylene glycol and ethanol, it is used in food flavorings as a solvent and excipient.
Triacetin is also used as a fuel additive to reduce knocking and improve the cold hardiness and viscosity of biodiesels. It is also an excipient used as a plasticizing agent in polymer blends used for tablet coating. Finally, triacetin is also part of the additives used in treated tobacco for cigarettes, fine-cut tobacco, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco and cigars.
